Sunday Service
Join us for Sunday Service at 10:00 am. Generally, on the first Sunday of the month we hold a Kito (special healing) service, while the fourth Sunday is for a special meditation service we call Shodaigyo, which combines sitting mediation (zazen) with chanting meditation. We chant the invocation Namu Myoho Renge Kyo, which means, “I devote myself to the Wonderful Law of the Lotus Sutra.” Learn more.
Welcome, and thank you for visiting the Nichiren Mission of Hawaii website. Our church is dedicated to the practice and study of Nichiren Buddhism here in Hawaii. Nichiren Shonin dedicated his life to cultivating the Buddha seed in all human beings, revealing the key to their happiness is found in the Lotus Sutra.
Please feel free to browse.
Inspired by Shakyamuni’s compassion, we are a community dedicated to the study and practice of Nichiren Buddhism here in the greater Seattle area. If you are new to Buddhism, please feel free to peruse our “Buddhism” page, as we’ve tried to supply you with enough information there to get your feet wet. Of course, we’d much rather meet you in person! Our Sunday services are held at 10:30 a.m. at our Seattle location, followed by a Dharma school for children at 11:30.
Our Sangha follows the teachings of the Eternal Shakyamuni Buddha as set forth in the Lotus Sutra and the teachings of our founder, Nichiren Shonin, and our main practice is chanting the Odaimoku (Great Title) of the Lotus Sutra, “Namu Myoho Renge Kyo.“
We consider the the Sutra of the Lotus Flower of the Wonderful Dharma to be the highest teaching of the Buddha. Our main practice is to chant the Odaimoku, Namu-Myoho-Renge-Kyo, which means we devote ourselves to the Lotus Sutra. The most important teachings of the Lotus Sutra are equality and eternity. It means that anyone can attain Buddhahood at any time.
Our temple is part of the Nichiren Shu School of Japanese Buddhism which was founded by the 13th century Japanese Buddhist priest Nichiren Shonin (1222 - 1282). Nichiren Shonin told us that the Buddha’s enlightenment was altogether contained in the Odaimoku (Namu-Myoho-Renge-Kyo), and that consequently, when we uphold it, the merits which the Buddha accumulated before and after his enlightenment are naturally transferred to us.
