Shin-Bon Service Saturday July 15, 2023 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Followed by Lantern Floating at Pond & Food in Social Hall

At the end of the O’Bon week, our temple observes another O’Bon ritual called Shin-Bon, a service (Bon for the newly deceased) dedicated to those who died since the last O’Bon. This year, we will hold Shin-Bon Service on Saturday, July 15th, 2023 at 7:00 PM and honor each of the newly deceased with Tōrō, a floating lantern. Following the service, we will release the lanterns in the lotus pond and chant as the Tōrō float gently through the water – signifying their return to the spiritual world. Up-to 60 attendees may offer floating lanterns to remember loved ones who passed in previous years. Floating lantern availability is prioritized for present and former members. Application deadline is June 30, 2023.

Obon Service Sunday July 10, 2022 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM

Originally, the Tōba started as a stupa, where the remains of the Buddha were enshrined. With the passage of time, Buddhism was spread to other countries, and the stupa transformed into a five storied pagoda, where various sutra scrolls were placed instead of the remains of the Buddha. The five-storied pagoda represents the five elements of the universe (sky, wind, fire, water, and earth). The five story pagodas were very expensive to build. Eventually, the five-storied pagoda were replaced with flat wooden Tōba but kept the shapes of the five elements, and it became possible for any person to offer. Therefore, please look at the top of the Tōba as it symbolizes the head, face, chest, and belly, while under the Odaimoku symbolizes feet of the deceased person at where the names of your ancestors are written.
