It all started when…
Puunene Nichiren Mission is one of Japanese Nichiren-Shu Buddhist Missionary Temple at Maui Island In Hawaii States U.S.A. near the Kahului Airport.
Rev. Genyu Oba established a temporary place to spread the dharma in the town of Wailuku, which is located in the center of the island, in November 1920. Attending the opening ceremony, Mr. William McGerrow, the chief accountant for the Hawaii Commercial and Sugar Company, announced that he would offer a parcel of land next to a public cemetery free of charge to any of Japanese Buddhist temples. While other temples hesitated because of the remoteness of the land, Rev. Oba seized the opportunity and applied for it.
Mr. McGerrow wholeheartedly granted the request of Rev. Oba and declared the property as the site for Nichiren Mission.
Finally Puunene Nichiren Mission founded in November 11 1922 by the priest Temmyoin Nichirai Shonin who is Rev. Genyu Oba. they were able to hold the dedication ceremony for the completion of the first Nichiren temple on Maui. It is called Puunene Nichiren Mission because it is located in Puunene, surrounded by cotton fields that separated Puunene from Kahului and facing a vast stretch of sugar cane fields.
